Volvo . How to Replace the Water Hoses in a Mitsubishi Eclipse

The sporty Mitsubishi Eclipse won over Americans quickly when it debuted with model year 1990. This little car needs to keep a cool engine just like any other vehicle, so make sure you replace the water hoses at least every three years. You should see enough wear by that time to warrant the change. This article deals with model years 1999 through 2008.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Gates radiator hoses #22183 and #22124
Flathead screwdriver
Pliers
Digital camera
Marking pencil
Utility knife
Coarse sandpaper
Container
Jack and jack stands
Adjustable hose clamps
CoolantRemove Old Hoses

Step by Step :
1
Select the correct water or radiator hoses at your auto parts retailer. These are Gates radiator hoses # 22183 (upper) and #22124 (lower) for a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
2
Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the screw that controls the tension of an adjustable clamp to move it out of the way. Remove the old clamps depending on whether they are adjustable or tension. If the clamp is a wire tension clamp, use pliers and squeeze the clamp to move it to an area of the hose that is more pliable so it is out of the way.
3
Take a picture of the original placement if you have a digital camera so you can replicate it. Mark where the old hose came to on the machinery so you can put the replacement up the same amount and avoid leakage.
4
Slit the old hose with a utility knife if it has seized to the machinery to aid in removal. Use a piece of coarse sandpaper to clean the area where the hose was stuck to the automobile part. Clean the other connection areas while they are free.
5
Place a container below the radiator to catch the coolant mixture so it does not go into the storm drains and thus the ground water. Block the rear wheels, jack up the Mitsubishi Eclipse one side at a time, put the jack stands in place and let the car down on the jack stands.
6
Do away with the top hose by slipping it off the radiator shroud at one end and the thermostat housing at the other. Drain the radiator by opening the drain plug located at the bottom, or take out the bottom hose and discard with the old clamps. Sand the areas where the old hose met the Mitsubishi Eclipse parts to remove pieces of hose and other grit. Pour the old coolant into an empty coolant bottle.
Install New Hoses

Step by Step :
1
Reverse the steps used in removing the old Mitsubishi Eclipse hoses to install the new ones. Use adjustable clamps with screws for greater protection in holding the new hoses in place.
2
Place the clamps on the top hose and slide toward the middle of the hose. Tighten each clamp by tightening the screw. Push the hose securely onto the top opening in the radiator shroud at one end and the thermostat housing (at the top of the water pump) on the other.
3
Repeat Step 2 for the clamps and connect the hose to the bottom radiator shroud at one end and the bottom of the engine at the other. Adjust the clamps into place and tighten the screw.
4
Pour the old coolant back into the radiator if it is still clean. Fill the remaining space in the radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water up to the cap line. Add more as it goes down until it stops percolating and making room for more coolant. Start the engine with the radiator cap still open.
5
Start up the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The thermostat will get warmer and the fluid will drop as the coolant begins to circulate. From here, you can finish filling up the radiator. Replace the radiator cap and fill up the overflow reservoir to the line marked "full."
6
Check to see that the temperature gauge doesn't run higher than before. Verify that the drain plug is closed and there are no leaks at the hose connections or anywhere else.
Tips & Warnings
Add lubricant to the inside of the radiator shroud at the connection to make the job easier.

If the specific Gates hose is out of stock, ask your dealer for another comparable brand. It will work as long as it is for the Mitsubishi Eclipse in the correct model year.

Never work on a hot vehicle to avoid burns.

Volvo . How to Replace the Water Hoses in a Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer showed the world what an SUV should be in the mid-1990s. Unlike its utilitarian counterparts, the Explorer gives a comfortable ride with a sleek style. It's easy to keep the periodic maintenance on track. Just follow a schedule of checking the wear on the hoses. For the 2002 to 2008 model, you have to replace the water hoses every three years or so.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Gates radiator hoses #22791 and #22790
Flathead screwdriver
Digital camera
Marking pencil
Utility knife
Coarse sandpaper
Jack and jack stands
Adjustable radiator hose clamps
CoolantRemove Old Hoses

Step by Step :
1
Visit your local auto parts store to buy the water/coolant hoses for your Ford Explorer. These will be Gates #22791 for the upper hose and Gates #22790 for the lower hose. Other brands are available and the preformed hoses will all fit specifically in the area meant for them on the Ford Explorer.
2
Loosen the old clamps on the radiator hoses with a flathead screwdriver. Move it toward the middle of the hose. Look at the placement of the two hoses connected to the radiator to determine the correct positioning. Your new hoses will have the same shape.
3
Take a picture of the original placement if you have a digital camera so you can replicate it. Mark where the old hose came to on the machinery so you can install the replacement at the same point and avoid leakage.
4
Slit the top of the old hose with a utility knife if it has seized to the machinery. Cutting just a couple of inches below the insertion point will allow you to peel it away as needed. Use a piece of coarse sandpaper to clean the area where the hose was stuck to the automobile part. Clean the other connection areas while they are free.
5
Block the rear wheels and jack up the Ford Explorer one side at a time. Place a container on the ground below the radiator to catch the expelled coolant so it does not go into the storm drains or the ground water.
6
Drain the radiator by opening the drain plug located at the bottom, or take out the bottom hose. Remove the top hose by slipping it off the radiator shroud at one end and the thermostat housing at the other. Discard all the used hoses and clamps. Sand the areas where the old hose met the Ford Explorer parts to remove pieces of hose and other grit.
Install New Hoses

Step by Step :
1
Reverse the steps used in removing the old Ford Explorer hoses to install the new ones. Use adjustable clamps with screws for greater protection in holding the new hoses in place.
2
Place the clamps on the top hose and slide toward the middle of the hose. Push the hose securely onto the top opening in the radiator shroud at one end and the thermostat housing (at the top of the water pump) on the other. Tighten each clamp by tightening the screw.

4
Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water up to the cap line. Refill it more as it goes down. Do this until it stops percolating and making room for more coolant. Start the engine with the radiator cap still open.
5
Start up the Ford Explorer. The thermostat will get warmer and the fluid will drop as the coolant begins to circulate. From here, you can finish filling up the radiator. Replace the radiator cap and fill up the overflow reservoir to the line marked "full."
6
Check to see that the temperature gauge does not run higher than before, the drain plug is closed and there are no leaks at the hose connections or anywhere else.
Tips & Warnings
Add lubricant to the inside of the radiator shroud at the connection to make the job easier.

Check the owner's manual for models not addressed in this article. Some differences may occur.

Do not work under the hood on any car when it is hot from running. This is particularly true when working with water hoses.

Firing order Don't confuse cylinder sequence with firing order. Although your engine may have its cylinders in simple numerical sequence, if the cylinders were fired in that order, the engine would rock violently as first the cylinders on one side (or toward the front) fired in rapid succession, and then the other cylinders did likewise. To avoid this, the firing order is carefully arranged to distribute the shock of combustion evenly throughout the engine. The cylinders fire in very swift sequence, and the result is a fairly stable engine. A typical firing order for a Ford V-8 engine (with cylinders #1 to #4 on one side and cylinders #5 to #8 on the other) would be #1, #5, #4, #2, #6, #3, #7, #8. The firing order is printed inside each of the engines shown in Figures 12-2 through 12-8. Trace the path of combustion back and forth throughout each of these engines so you can see how the shock of combustion is distributed to avoid rocking the engine. Remember, the whole thing happens very rapidly. '>art'"' ^eeP'n9 ^our Car m G°°d Condition, System by System Removing the spark plugs 506 Car Insurance 2007 ford freestar passenger 283679

To maintain the proper firing order, each spark-plug wire must go from the proper terminal on your distributor cap to the proper spark plug, so before you remove anything, label each wire with its proper number in the cylinder sequence. To label your wires, place a piece of masking tape or a clothespin on the spark plug wire near the boot that covers the tip of each plug. Put the proper cylinder number on each one. If you also label the boot where each wire enters the distributor cap terminal, you'll never be unsure about hooking things up properly. (Of course, if you make it a habit to remove the wire from only one plug at a time and to put it back before you remove another, you won't ever get into trouble — unless another wire comes off accidentally.) One way to royally confuse yourself and make the relatively simple task of changing spark plugs into a nightmare is to pull all your spark plugs out at one time. To keep your sanity and to avoid turning this job into an all-weekend project, work on one spark plug at a time: Remove it, inspect it, clean it, and, if it's salvageable, gap it. Then replace it — before you move on to the next spark

plug. After you label the wires, follow these steps to remove each spark plug: 1. Gently grasp a spark plug wire by the boot, where it connects to the spark plug. Never yank on the wire itself (you can damage the wiring); just grasp the boot, twist it, and pull it straight out so that you can pull it off the plug. The shiny thing sticking out of the engine block is the terminal of the spark plug. Figure 12-10, later in this chapter, shows you all the parts of a spark plug, including the terminal. 2. Use a nice soft rag or a small paint brush to clean around the area where the spark plug enters the block — or you can blow the dirt away with a soda straw. Doing so keeps loose junk from falling down the hole into the cylinder when the plug is removed. 3. Find your spark plug socket (the big one with the rubber lining) and place it down over the spark plug; exert some pressure while turning it slightly to be sure that it's all the way down. Like everything else in auto repair, don't be afraid to use some strength. But do it in an even, controlled manner. If you bang or jerk things, you can damage them, but you'll never get anywhere if you tippy-toe around.

. Chapter 12: Keeping Your Electrical System in Tune 4. Pick up your ratchet handle and stick the square end into the square hole in the spark-plug socket. If you can work more comfortably by adding a couple of extensions between the handle and the socket so that you can move the handle freely from side to side without hitting anything, go ahead. You add them in the same way you added the socket to the handle. (If you have trouble with getting the plug loose, see the "Dealing with difficult plugs" section, which follows, for encouragement.) The little knob on the back of the ratchet handle makes the ratchet turn the socket either clockwise or counterclockwise) You can tell which way the handle will turn the plug by listening to the clicks that the handle makes when you move it in one direction. If it clicks when you move it to the right, it will turn the socket counterclockwise when you move it, silently, to the left. If the clicks are audible on the leftward swing, it will move the socket clockwise on the rightward swing. Every screw, nut,
